Storing your hammock

Dry storing your hammock is the most important aspect of extending it's life. The first step is to wash any debris nad impediments from your hammock. Now let it dry completely. Neve r store a wet or damp hammock. Store your hammock in a durabel and breathable storage bag. Check with your manufacturer on what bag to use. If you do not have a bag, hang your hammock by it's rings in your garage.

The Mold Issue

People love their hammocks. What they don't love is mold and mildew problems associated with long-term use outdoors. Some people are fine with simply taking the time to give proper care to an outdoor hammock, or they put up with a musty odor until they do find the time to deal with the problem. People who suffer from mold allergies, on the other hand, don't have this luxury.
Mold allergy sufferers are much better off purchasing a synthetic hammock made with a solution-dyed rope made of synthetics such as Dura Cord or polyester. With these materials, mold is not sustainable, and any cleaning can be done with a garden hose, and perhaps a bit of soap. People not allergic to mold can afford to put off a spot cleaning, but allergy sufferers don't have that luxury. The ease of care with synthetic hammocks is well worth the investment.

Spot Cleaning my Hammock

Most hammock retailers will be happy to sell you their own brand of hammock cleaner. In reality all you need is a blotting towel and good old soap and water. Sometimes club soda will be needed if your hammock has any cotton fibers, like an ecuadorean hammock. Simply blot up any spills with your dry towel. When done, rub a very diluted soap mixture until clean. Rinse slightly and blot dry. Now you're ready to get back to some serious relaxing.

Hammock Longevity

To prolong the life of your hammock never leave it exposed to the elements for extended period of time. The biggest deterrents to longevity are UV rays and rain, both of which can destroy the fabric and ropes in your hammock. I suggest a care and storage kit designed for your particular hammock. Also keep up on useful hammock cleaning information posted on the internet. With proper care a quality hammock could last a generation.

Washing Hammocks with Non-Removable Spreader Bars

The biggest problem with washing a hammock with non-removable spreader bars is the space required. They are too big for most sinks and too bulky for bathtubs. Your best bet is a patio or driveway. Spread your hammock out flat and gently brush with mild laundry detergent (remember, no bleach). Repeat with other side. After cleaning, hang your hammock with no creases and alow it to dry.

Hand Washing your Hammock

To prevent the rings of your hammock from getting entangled while hand washing, grasp both ends of the hammock and fold it in half. Securely tie the hammock together just below the hanging rings. Tie your hammock again at the opposite end and in the middle. Put your tied up hammock in a large sink or bathtub filled with water and mild detergent (no bleach). Agitate your hammock until it's clean, then untie and spread flat to dry.

Hammock Do's and Don'ts

Avoid catastrophic failure of the hammock materials. Avoid tying to dead trees or other supports that could fail. Avoid long-term sunlight exposure as much as possible to prevent deterioration of nylon and polypropylene materials. Avoid tripping over the canopy guidelines. Limit hammock use to one person at a time. Avoid snagging the hammock fabric on brush, limbs, briers, rocks, etc. while making or breaking camp. Use a whistle if you set up far from the traveled path but need to attract the attention of others for help.

Machine Washing Your Hammock

Fold your hammock in half and securely tie the hammock together just below the hanging rings. Tie your hammock again at the opposite end and in the middle. Put your tied up hammock in a pillow case and tie the end of the pillow case closed. Machine wash with a mild laundry detergent (no bleach). After the rinse cylcle remove and untie your hammock. Spread it out flat and allow to dry, preferably in the sun for a faster process.
